SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY STRATEGY FOR START-UP ENTERPRISE: DEFINING & EXECUTING SUCCESSFUL COLLABORATIONS

Velveteen is a high-end children’s fashion brand launched in 2012 that delivers finely crafted and hand embroidered clothing using a combination of Indian artisan techniques. Named Best International Fashion Brand in 2014 by Junior Design Award UK, Velveteen enjoyed early success, turning a growing spotlight on the brand and its commitment to supporting mothers and children in Indian partner communities. The Velveteen customer – like its founders – was looking for a meaningful experience with a brand that let them purchase with a sense of purpose.

Galvanize Partners worked with the Velveteen team to define a meaningful philanthropic mission reflective of the founders’ values and those of their growing customer base. We leveraged our personal networks and expertise in international development to identify social enterprises in India whose own mission, values and impact aligned with Velveteen’s, and we negotiated and executed successful partnerships that brought to life the client’s commitment to supporting education and job opportunities in under served communities. Velveteen partnered with ElRhino paper to produce hang-tags for the entire collection made of sustainable paper that supports efforts to conserve the habitat of the rare one-horned rhino and the Indian elephant. The partnership also enabled this woman-owned small business to create a dozen new jobs for (mostly) women in the extremely poor region of Assam, India.
